Job Summary:

The Meat Manager will lead and develop a highly motivated team focused on serving guests with a primary emphasis on the overall Meat and Fresh Store guest experience and team member engagement to consistently meet or exceed guest expectations.

Purposefully drives knowledge and understanding of meat department and local products through interaction and communication that inspires Meat department team members to educate and serve guests.

The Meat Manager provides leadership, direction, and oversees all meat operations and staffing for the department. The Manager proactively coordinates activities of team members in the meat department as well as assigns job tasks, scheduling, company policy & food safety compliance, training, merchandising, department planning and production. Manages product quality standards, meat cutting standards, prep production, food prep, merchandising and sales functions, and inventory optimization and pricing accuracy. The Manager trains and develops employees to enable their success and ability to advance in their careers.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Provide guests with a remarkable shopping experience by demonstrating, training, and holding team members accountable for excellent guest services

Achieving department financials (sales, profit and loss, budgets) by implementing best practices and optimization strategies

Efficiently lead department staff with focus on accountability and achieving high level of business performance outcomes for department

Development of all department staff (annual goals/performance review, quarterly business review)

Interview job applicants and evaluate work performance to recommend personnel actions (e.g. hiring, retention, promotion, transfer, dismissal)

Responsible for department's merchandising plan and implementation, providing innovative solutions, emphasizing "fresh"

Manage product rotation, spoils, shrink, and markdowns per company policy

Oversee schematic implementation, stocking standards, item to tag integrity, back room organization, sign and price integrity, department inventory accuracy

Accountable for department's overall cleanliness/conditions

Manage department to ensure meat products are prepared according to company guidelines and special orders are prepared as requested by customers (e.g., special meat cuts, etc.)

Train department staff on department procedures, hands-on safety and food safety

Order product (utilizes order/inventory system, pre-orders, promotion/seasonal planning) Analyze and manage product performance

Prepare cutting lists, cut/process product according to company standards to maximize sales and gross profit.

Contribute to overall store conditions (to include store safety, food safety, sanitation, hazardous waste, protection of company assets, etc.) ensuring a safe working and shopping experience

Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

Product ordering, inventory control, meat operations, merchandising, sales techniques, and department management to include a strong understanding and knowledge of primal cuts and cutting techniques

Learn and retain policies and procedures, make decisions, lead and instructs team members, recognize sale trends and indicators, work within and promote a team environment

Strong organization, administration (to include department financial) and math skills

Knowledge of department operations; meat, poultry, fish and pre-packaged products; special product needs that arise for seasons/holidays; trends in cooking and recipes that effect demand; department food safety and hazardous materials rules/regulations; visual merchandising techniques

Familiarity with use and care of professional cutlery, saws, tenderizers, grinders, wrapping equipment and other department related tools

Strong communication skills (written and verbal)

Must be highly functional in a team environment and have strong cooperation and team building attributes

Necessary to demonstrate an eagerness to learn and take on new tasks and challenges

Education: High school diploma or equivalent knowledge gained through formal education, specialized training, or additional job experience; some college education is preferred

Experience: Four years Meat Department experience, plus a minimum of two years meat cutting experience

Other: Must be available to work a variety of required retail hours

Physical: Basic office and store environment: ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, use stairs, reach, pull and lift objects

About the Position:

The Meat Manager is responsible for assigning job tasks, scheduling, enforcing company policy, training, merchandising, planning and monitoring production; satisfying projected sales, ordering merchandise; quality control, and other duties as assigned.


  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds. Continuous walking, standing, reaching, and bending.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Strong team player with a willingness and desire to learn, work hard, and have fun with it!
  • Availability to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
