President of Research & Development is responsible for leading and
developing a highly trained, creative and motivated engineering
team. The team will work in an environment that is structured to

motivation and speed. This position oversees a large, multi-site
organization responsible for developing products to grow or enhance
Abbott's Heart Failure Medical Device product portfolio and ensure
customer needs are met.Primary Job Scope:Responsible for leading a
large product development function for the Heart Failure division
within Medical DevicesLead R&D and product development strategy
in line with Heart Failure vision and business strategyRetains,
develops and attracts the world's best engineering and scientific
talentWorks with the Senior Staff to develop strategic and
financial plans to guide the success of the business
unitDepartmental budget and P&L responsibility for
R&DDirect strategic innovation and leverage in-depth
understanding of market needs both globally and
geographicallyDemonstrate deep understanding of healthcare
economics in the medical device business unit's space and create
product development strategies to drive positive outcomesIdentify
and provide expert technical assessment and be a significant
contributor to new segment opportunitiesLead change management as
we transform R&D organization to align with digital
roadmapDrive efficiencies in the Product Development organization
and urgency in the delivery of next generation products as well as
strong product development and technical skill setsRepresent
R&D technology to external KOLs, other functions and businesses

with Program Management, IT, Finance, R&D, Quality, Marketing,
Clinical/Pre-Clinical, Regulatory and other functions as needed to
ensure effective commercialization of new productsCollaborate
cross-functionally with the Operations, Quality and Supply Chain
functions to ensure effective execution of design transfer and to
make sure ongoing manufacturing needs are metComplies with U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Medical Device Directive
(MDD) regulations, and other required regulations, Company
policies, standard operating procedures, processes, and task
assignmentsMaintains positive and cooperative communications and
collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors,
and vendorsOversee effectiveness of systems and procedures to
ensure compliance to FDA, GMP, and all other applicable agency
regulationsSupport all Divisional initiatives as identified by
divisional management and in support of Quality Management Systems
(QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory
requirementsPartner with Legal team to manage intellectual property
portfolioPartner with Business Development group to identify
companies for potential partnership and/or acquisitionDevelop and
manage relationships with physicians and health care professionals
for key strategic alliancesManage global R&D budgets to ensure
product pipeline and business objectives are metPerform other
related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as
assignedMinimum QualificationsBachelor of Science degree in
technical fieldMedical device industry experience is
requiredMinimum 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in
high-volume, multi-product, global product development
environmentsMinimum of 5+ years in a hands-on product development
technical roleExperience in leading large multi-functional R&D
teams including systems, mechanical, electrical and
softwareExceptional leadership and people management skills,
including demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop
employees; The ability to set goals and provide positive and
constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships
and improve business resultsAbility to travel up to 30%, including
internationallyPreferred QualificationsMBA a plusTrack record of
delivering complex projects on time and on-budgetDemonstrated
success in partnering with business operations and applying product
development practices that positively impact business
operationsSelf-directed with strong business acumen; Ability to
analyze, forecast and manage critical expenses and
obligationsStrong organizational, planning and project management
skillsStrong demonstration of good business judgment and effective
