Summary SUMMARY: -The Highland Emergency Core Faculty will
provide clinical emergency medicine services, teaching and
scholarly work for Alameda Health System, under employment from
Alameda Health Medical Group. Services will be on-site at Highland
Hospital.DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: Following are the

in the classification. -EM Academic Core Faculty Job DescriptionThe
Highland Emergency Medicine Residency Program has trained emergency
physicians for over 40 years. It has been ACGME (Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited since 1984, and
now trains 11-12 residents per class in PGY 1-4. Based in one of
the West Coast's oldest public hospitals, the EM residency program
is a national leader in Emergency Ultrasound, ED (Emergency
Department) HIV testing and treatment, non-narcotic analgesia, ED
initiated buprenorphine treatment, care of victims of sexual
assault, as well as the birthplace of social emergency medicine.
The program is nationally known for training emergency physicians
who are clinically outstanding and can lead and thrive in any
environment. Core faculty are based in the ED at Highland Hospital
in Oakland, and are national leaders in their areas of expertise,
highly clinically skilled, and outstanding bedside teachers. The
Highland faculty is much smaller than most programs of comparable
size. Therefore, the faculty group expects an elevated level of
commitment to the residency program from its core members. - This
position both supports the delivery of high-quality patient care to
our community in the East Bay and the training of future leaders in
Emergency Medicine (EM) who will carry out the mission of the
department and hospital. Core faculty may also be selected for
their specific expertise and unique contribution to the program.
Core faculty are engaged in targeted residency activities, plus
additional contributions based on their expertise in EM. A
component of FTE is allocated for academic work and teaching for EM
core faculty.Academic Core Faculty Clinical RequirementsProvide
appropriate medical services to all patients presenting to the
Emergency DepartmentProvide services for the contracted number of
shifts for EM core faculty at Highland set forth by the AHMG
Compensation Committee. This shall include back-up duties as
determined by the Chair and consistent with the departmental
scheduling policy.Supervise and teach residents, interns, medical
students, and other learners in the delivery of patient care and
practice of Emergency Medicine.Foster a supportive and safe
clinical learning environment for residents, students, and
learners.Work and collaborate with consultants and subspecialists
in a collegial fashion in service of patients.Model exceptional
clinical practice and communication skills for learners in our
training programs.Deliver care based on best practices and
evidence-based medicine, adhere to applicable standards of care,
medical ethics, and policies and protocols.Complete documentation
in the Electronic Health Record in a timely fashion, commensurate
with any policies set forth by AHS Health Information Management or
its proxyProvide on-line base hospital medical control and
consultation for Alameda County EMS providers.Be responsible, on a
case-by-case basis as the need arises, for taking all actions
necessary to facilitate the appropriate transfer of a patient to or
from another medical facility to gain access to the appropriate
services and medical care needed.Consult with EM QRC leadership to
achieve better clinical outcomes for patients, improve the quality
of patient care and maximize the efficient utilization of physician
and hospital resources.Report to departmental leadership and
hospital administration, as needed, material concerns about quality
of care, delay in delivery of medical services to patients, or any
patient concerns.Comply with the requirements and standards of AHS
(Alameda Health System) Medical Staff bylaws, The Joint Commission
(TJC) and any other accrediting agencies designated as well as all
applicable AHS policies, code of conduct, rules, and
regulations.Support departmental operations and nursing leadership
in implementing new procedures, controls, and systems to promote
and facilitate quality, cost controls, reimbursement functions,
standardization of products and equipment, and any other requests
made by hospital.Provide effective and timely communications to
referring or admitting physicians, patients and family concerning
the clinical status of each patient admitted through the Emergency
Department.Perform other select duties as assigned by the
department Chair or Vice Chair.Residency Core Faculty Requirements
Conference/Didactics (ACGME Requirement)Active participation in
Emergency Medicine Residency teaching conferences including
Wednesday Weekly Didactics and Monthly Journal Club/Follow-Up
