Intern - Microfluidics Engineer - Automated Fluidic System
Company: 10x Genomics
Posted on: January 15, 2022
We are seeking an extraordinary student to join the
Microfluidics Group as an intern during the summer of 2022. Our
team develops the microfluidic systems and consumables that form
one cornerstone of 10x products. In this role, you will be building
and characterizing an automated flow cell platform and exploring
its applications in performing biochemistries used in genomics. You
will be paired with a senior engineer on the team who will provide
mentorship and technical guidance. You will be able to experience
what it is like to work as an R&D engineer at 10x Genomics and
help us develop new technologies that impact human health.
What You Will Be Doing
Use your prototyping skills to build an automated fluidic system
with various components, including flowcell, pumps/valves,
manifolds, sensors, etc.
Develop control software interface to help users conveniently
modify fluidic operations
Characterize the system's fluidic and mass transport properties
using experiments and simulations
Demonstrate the ability of the established system in performing
Communicate the results clearly to the team in weekly meetings and
Compose high-quality documentation and SOPs for the developed
What You Will Need
Current BS, MS, or Ph.D. students in mechanical engineering,
chemical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical
engineering, or a related field, with an emphasis on
fluidic/microfluidic systems building and testing (previous
industry internship experience is a plus)
Strong understanding of the fundamentals of mass transport
phenomena, including convection, diffusion, reaction, and their
Demonstrated ability to build an automated fluidic system using
hardware and software skills (flowcell experience is a plus)
Experience with fluorescence microscopy and image analysis
(experience in flow analysis using fluorescent dye or particles is
Basic Programming skills (e.g., Java, Python, OpenCV, C, C++);
experience in hardware control using APIs is a plus
Experience in using simulation software, such as COMSOL, to
understand flow and mass transport in a fluidic system
Basic skills in CAD drawing (e.g., SolidWorks) and 3D printing
Demonstrated ability to learn things quickly and deliver results
over short times
At 10x Genomics, accelerating our understanding of biology is more
than a mission for us. It is a commitment. This is the century of
biology, and the breakthroughs we make now have the potential to
change the world.
We enable scientists to advance their research, allowing them to
address scientific questions they did not even know they could ask.
Our tools have enabled fundamental discoveries across biology
including cancer, immunology, and neuroscience.
Our teams are empowered and encouraged to follow their passions,
pursue new ideas, and perform at their best in an inclusive and
dynamic environment. We know that behind every scientific
breakthrough, there is a deep infrastructure of talented people
driving the life sciences industry and making it possible for
scientists and clinicians to make new strides. We are dedicated to
